Hello, I'm Nicolau. I started drawing very early. Fortunately, I had the support of my parents and it was always fulfilling to do so. My parents and my godfather have saved thousands of drawings that I made as a child. Then my father taught me to draw by copying a drawing of a well-known dog in Brazil called Bidu. Drawing has always been an important part of my life and this is one of the factors that led me to study architecture at the Universidade de São Paulo.
Later, trying to understand the wonderful drawings of the Dutch artist M. C.Escher the first tiles come to my mind with the same principle as the tiles that I show you here. At that moment, the opportunity arose to see one of my tiles executed on a mural in an oncology clinic designed by the office where I worked.
After having worked in different architecture firms in São Paulo and Barcelona as B arquitectos, Paulo Lucio de Brito, AIA and The room studio,I have found in social networks the opportunity to offer my collaboration to the world of architecture through my tile drawings.
These tiles are drawn in such a way that they fit together in whatever position they are placed. The drawing remains continuous between one tile and another even if any of them is rotated by 90, 180 or 270 degrees. This principle allows the arrangement of the tiles in infinite different patterns.
There are four basic principles. The first and most obvious thing is to put them all with the same orientation. At the other extreme, you can put the tiles with random orientations. The other two patterns are achieved by rotating the tiles in one of their corners. There are four corners, and therefore four possible patterns generated by radial symmetry. However, when the four tiles resulting from a rotation are placed side by side, when four of these groups of tiles meet, the pattern resulting from the rotation of the corner opposite to that of the initial rotation is formed, you can see it in the video below.
Any other rule for the distribution of the tiles generates another pattern. In addition, all the patterns can be combined with each other allowing the architect an infinite number of possibilities.
The tiles can be manufactured as hydraulic or ceramic tiles with the colors that you choose to form unique murals or floors for each work.
